The awards take place during Restaurant Week (generally mid-November). The awards are given out in four categories: Best Overall Restaurant, Best New Restaurant, Wine-Bar and Best Chef. These categories differentiate between restaurants that serve food and those that do not, as well as distinguishing between restaurants that serve wine and those that do not (there is a fifth category: Bar). The awards are frequently criticized as arbitrary and subjective, but some say the award show has become more of a cultural event each year. The criteria for judging varies from year to year; it is often based on who had the most nominations which leads to biases such as age (under 30), gender (female), ethnicity (white), or other factors such as catering to celebrities or having an impressive wine list. The awards are organized by the San Francisco Magazine. The awards take place during Restaurant Week (generally mid-November). The following is a list of restaurants that were reviewed by The San Francisco Examiner. Note that restaurants with no rating are new or have recently changed chefs or ownership. The following is a list of restaurants that were reviewed by The San Francisco Chronicle.
